Chair's Message for 2020!

Happy New Year from the 31st LD Democrats!
Deep breath everyone! It's time to dive in head first into 2020. There is a brighter future for us all if we work together to make it happen.
In 2020 we must:
- Organize the legislative district caucus
- Find candidates to run for local legislative seats
- Rally voters for a presidential election to challenge and remove the most corrupt administration of our lifetime
There are plenty of opportunities to help, and I will let you know about that, but first, I want to say something about the importance of getting and staying involved in local politics.
I recently attended the swearing-in ceremony for four Auburn City Councilmembers, two of whom were endorsed by the 31st LD Democrats. We played an important role in electing a diverse group of local public servants committed to helping the people of our community lead safer and more productive lives. Addressing homelessness and combatting climate change were important parts of their collective campaign message, and now they can get to work to make those promises come true.
We have not had many electoral victories recently, and so it is important not only to celebrate this achievement, but also to learn from what worked so that we see more wins in upcoming elections.
The Auburn results show that voters will respond well to candidates with a wide range of backgrounds and experience who speak about the issues that matter most to the people of this community. I walked door-to-door with one of the Auburn candidates, and we spoke to neighbors about tough issues like safe injection sites and transportation funding. Ideas about how to solve these problems vary widely, but I believe when a canvasser comes to your door, it makes you feel that your opinion and your vote really matters.
For more victories to happen, we need more engagement and more volunteers! Our goal in 2020 is to invite more people to our monthly meetings and energize our committee work with fresh perspectives and new ideas.
Sound intriguing? You can help by attending our January "Pizza & a Movie" night. We plan to focus on addressing the climate crisis throughout this year, so we will start by showing some videos from the Climate Reality Leadership Corps "24 Hours of Reality". There will also be opportunities to learn about the work of our various committees. We need you to join and help with:
- Candidate recruitment committee
- Outreach committee
- Voter registration committee
- Finance committee
- Logo committee
- Fundraising/events committee
- Communications committee
- Questionnaire committee
- Caucus planning committee
- LAC/issues/get to work committee
In February Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz will visit the 31st for an informal "fireside chat". We hope to bring more of this type of program to our meetings to make them more engaging and productive. If you have ideas for a program or guest, please let me know by sending a note to: chair@31stdistrictdemocrats.org.
As always, we need your financial support to elect more Democrats here in the 31st, so I would be remiss in not reminding everyone reading this please to renew your membership (or join for the first time!) by visiting https://secure.actblue.com/donate/31stdues. Dues are $31 annually and give you the power to shape the future of the 31st Legislative District.
Peace!
Brian

January and February General Meetings
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
As Brain said, our January Meeting will be a bit more informal. Pizza and a Movie will get us started, then our body has a bit of business to address before breakout sessions for the various committies listed above. If you would like any more details on any the commitites, please respond to this email and the appropriate person will reach out. Additionaly, during our January meeting we will be accepting any final dontations for Nourish Pierce County. It was a goal to provide a food donation and monteray gift after our Holiday Party, but the amount collected fell short of expections. Any size dontation is helpful, so please clean out your pantries and bring checks made out NPC. Thank you in advance!
Also, please make sure you have our February meeting on your calendar! On February 26th, the 31st District Democrats will host a Fire Side Chat with Hilary Franz! Hilary was elected in 2016 as Washington Commissioner of Public Lands, and she will be running for re-election in 2020. Our intimate gathering will be an amazing opourtinuity to hear her views on a variety of topics. Please look for addtional information on our website, and upcoming newsletters, including a call for questions!
