["31st Legislative District Democrats"]

Dear Fellow Democrat,

We hope to see you this Wednesday, November 20th, at our general meeting  at the Edgewood Fire Station (10105 24th St E, Edgewood, WA 98371). Yep, that is one week earlier than normal to avoid any complications our members may have with Thanksgiving week coming up. The regular meeting begins at 7 PM, but please come early for a relaxed social hour at 6 PM to meet with like-minded neighbors. Review meeeting agenda here!

November Speaker: Kat Holmes
Implications of I-976 Passing

Last month, the 31st LD Democrats passed a resolution calling for rejection of Tim Eyman’s Initiative 976, which, if implemented, would cut billions of dollars in transportation funding over the next few years; however, it appears that the measure will pass. While a lawsuit was filed last week seeking to overturn I-976 in King County Superior Court, it is obvious that  even if I-976 does go away, we all know we have work to do on tax reform.

Our guest this month will be Kat Holmes who serves as Field Director for Washington Conservation Voters (WCV), a Washington State organization that opposed I-976 and supports programs and candidates dedicated to protecting our natural environment. She will help us understand how to move forward with environmentally friendly transportation projects in the wake of the passage of I-976.

Kat, the daughter of an Air Force Veteran and a Japanese immigrant, grew up in Kent, Washington. Later going on to graduate with a degree in Biology/Ecology from Western Washington University.
She fell in love with field work as an Organizing Fellow with Fuse Washington, and is excited to develop grassroots power for the environment and work for climate justice throughout Washington state.

Holiday Party and Food Drive

What: We’ll gather together as friends to celebrate the year’s victories (of all sizes), and share our hopes for the coming year. **This event will take place instead of the December meeting, regular meetings will resume in 2020.**

When: Friday, December 13th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Where: Buckley Grange (27725 Sumner Buckley Hwy, Buckley, WA 98321)

Food Drive Details: At our holiday party, we will also be holding a Food Drive in support of Nourish Pierce County. According to their website, "nearly 46,000 people now count on Nourish for food every month," and “40% of Nourish clients are children ages 18 and younger. 1 in 4 kids in Washington lives in a household that struggles to put food on the table.” But the young are not the only vulnerable demographic. Nourish also says that “the fastest growing group among Nourish clients is people over 55. Many were downsized in the recession and have been unable to find new employment. Seniors are often dealing with lack of transportation, functional limitations or health problems.”

As Democrats, we are committed to improving access for all people to needed goods and services, and that includes doing our small part to help families in need this holiday season. If you can do so, please bring nonperishable food items or a monetary gift to the party, or to our November meeting, it would be appericated. For more details on recommended dontations, please check out this list by Nourish Pierce County
