Dear Fellow Democrat,

With two openings on its seven-member board, the Enumclaw City Council had an important responsibility this winter as it appointed new members. Sadly, this responsibility was met with disregard for half the sixteen applicants - the women. Big thanks to Amber Walker for elevating this concern to The Courier-Herald. Check out Ms. Walker's letter to the editor detailing the ways interviews and consideration for the women differed from those of the men.

What's going on in your local government? And how are you holding your elected officials accountable? We must each do our part.

Congresswoman Schrier focused on Vaccines and Testing for our District

8th District Congresswoman Kim Schrier is committed to ensuring we have access to resources needed to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. From Auburn to Wenatchee to Yakima, she is ensuring Washingtonians have access to vaccines as quickly as possible.

Congresswoman Schrier was instrumental in bringing a rapid testing pilot to Auburn School District, of which several schools are right here in the 31st! Auburn SD is one of the first eight school districts in Washington State to participate in a rapid testing protocol Dr. Schrier developed in partnership wtih Seattle Children's Hospital. Representative Schrier recently visited a testing site at Bowman Creek Elementary School. Read more about her visit here. In addition to vaccines and layered mitigation, testing provides an additional piece security as we bring students back to school.

Hear Dr. Kim Schrier at our April 28 Meeting

Our next general meeting will be Wednesday, April 28th, 7 PM, on Zoom. In addition to candidates running for office in our region, we expect the following guests:
  • Congresswoman Kim Schrier, MD
  • Representative for Whole WA

Universal Healthcare for WA State

Whole Washington is dedicated to securing universal healthcare in Washington State. State Senate Bill 5204 would establish the Whole Washington Trust implementing not-for-profit, single-payer healthcare for every resident.

SB 5204, introduced by Senator Hasegawa and six other cosponsors, guarantees universal healthcare to all Washingtonians, with a funding mechanism devised by a noted economist, reviewed by the Department of Revenue and the Employment Securities Department, which demonstrates that Washington state residents will save billions of dollars annually when universal healthcare is implemented.

In Washington State, 498,000 have no health coverage and even more residents are underinsured. COVID-19 demonstrates that healthcare should not be tied to employment. The 2020 platform of the Washington State Democratic Party affirmed, “An affordable universal single-payer system is essential to provide the most equitable and effective health care, serving both individual and public health needs."

Call your State Senator or comment on the bill to have your voice heard! See: Things you can do right now.
