Dear Fellow Democrat,
On January 9, the Democratic PCOs of the 31st legislative district re-elected me as Chair. This happened just three days after we all witnessed via cable news and social media the ransacking of the US Capitol by armed insurrectionists egged on by the former President. Just one day later, the Seattle Times published an article quoting 31st LD State Senator Phil Fortunato as saying “Hell, yeah!” when asked if he would still vote for Donald Trump after this blatant, violent attack on our democracy.
Thank you for trusting me to act as Chair again. My goal for the next two years is to find a Democrat willing to run and able to win against Senator “I’m-For-Trump-unato” who floated a bill in 2018 to arm teachers with deadly weapons, who gave away firearms as “prizes” while flying the Confederate flag at his fundraisers, and who behaves abominably toward trans children.
Meanwhile, in the State House, Rep. Drew Stokesbary continues to misinform the people of this district using Republican propaganda designed to alienate voters in our district from investments in programs that promote the public good that are supported by Democrats.
The 31st LD is the next domino to fall in the ousting of Republicans from influence over WA State politics. In recent years we’ve seen Democratic campaigns succeed in neighboring districts like the 5th, the 30th, and the 47th. As people are forced by economic hardship (exacerbated by COVID, Republican tax policy, and suppression of labor unions) to move out of expensive cost-of-living areas to the north of us, the 31st has and will continue to move gradually toward a more progressive electorate. We must capitalize on this to defeat Stokesbary, Robertson and Fortunato and their ilk in the future.
That means we have a lot of work ahead of us. Let’s focus on the basics. Let’s recruit precinct committee officers in dozens of un-filled precincts. Let’s reach out to and identify likely Democratic voters. Let’s find new, creative ways to raise funds and communicate our message in an increasingly online world. And let’s unflinchingly expose the malfeasance of local Republican leaders who are not acting in the best interests of their constituents.
If you are able and willing to help, please let me know directly by sending an email to chair@31stdistrictdemocrats.org.
Peace & Solidarity,
Brian Gunn, Chair
31st LD Democrats
