Dear Brian Gunn,
You're INVITED to our 2022 Summer Picnic! RSVP here.
We will not have a general meeting this month. Instead, on Sunday, August 14, 2022, the 31st LD Democrats will host a Canvass and Summer Picnic event at Marion Grange Hall (27725 Sumner-Buckley Hwy, Buckley 98321).
Dr. Kim Schrier will join us to kick off the canvass at 12:15pm, we'll knock on doors from 1pm-3pm, and then everyone's invited back to the Grange Hall for hot dogs and hamburgers at 4:00pm. Folks are welcome to join us for the canvass, the picnic, or both.
The event will kick off the all-important second half of the 2022 mid-term campaign season as we get the results of the August Primary and prepare for the November General Election.
Early results from the primary show just how crucial votes from the eastern parts of Pierce and King county are going to be in the general. While Dr. Schrier as so far garnered just over 48% of the votes overall in the 8th Congressional District, her numbers in Pierce County were only 35%. To get to 50% + 1, we're going to need Democrats to turn out all across the district, including rural areas such as Buckley and Enumclaw. Our canvass will reach out to those voters, and we'll encourage folks to start now to make a plan to vote in November.
Our basic freedoms such as the right to vote, the right to make choices in our personal lives, and the right to access affordable health care are all at stake in this election.
We will also be encouraging voters to support our candidates for 31st LD State Representative. Holly Stanton is currently leading in the votes for Pos. 1 against two Republicans. The primary may also contain a surprise in the form of Carrie Wilbur, our candidate for Pos. 2, who ran as a write-in against an unopposed R candidate. At the moment, her race is leading the state in write-in votes, and while we won't know the names until the election is certified, the high number of write-in votes is encouraging. If she gets just 1% of the total votes, and is the 2nd highest vote-getter, her statement will appear in the voter pamphlet, her name will be printed on the ballots that will be mailed to voters in October, and we will have been successful in getting out the message that there is an alternative to electing a Republican in the 31st LD.

Get Involved! Build our Bench!
Pierce County, like most governments, depends on the active civic participation of citizens. As several boards and commissions have vacancies, please consider lending your voice to these decision-making bodies. Many of the policy recommendations and laws considered by these groups impact our everyday lives from property valuation, parks & recreation, planning for children, elderly and veterans, and even setting the salary for elected officials. That is why it is important to have balanced representation.
By getting involved and participating in your community, you can be an example for your families and neighbors. You can choose your level of involvement and time commitment. Most of these boards meet monthly - some quarterly. Please review the information found on the Pierce County Boards and Commissions website.
Volunteering can have long-term impacts. People often ask you “how did you get involved”? PTA turns into school board member. Volunteer firefighter turns into a fire chief. Board and commission member elected as County Executive!!
